How Does The Kidney Fail And How To Prevent It?

The kidney is one of the most important organs of our body. We know this when we hear about someone’s kidney fail and start getting tremors when we think about what would happen if the same happened to us. This is why you must take good care of your kidney from now itself so that you don’t have to face problems later on in life. And, to take proper care of it, you first need proper knowledge about what the kidney is, its functioning, causes of kidney issues, and lots more.

We have two kidneys, located at the back of our abdomen; each being 4-5 inches long. The most important function of the kidney is to filter the blood. Each kidney comprises of millions of nephrons, each acting as an individual microscopic filter. All the waste from the blood is removed, while also controlling the proportion of salts and fluids in the body. This waste is converted into urine, which is expelled out of the body.

Now what happens when the kidneys fail? Well, it is almost impossible to find out about a kidney failure at an early stage because it is possible to lose as much as 90% of kidney functioning without showing any symptoms at all! It could in fact take years before a chronic kidney disease could cause a total kidney failure. In such conditions, the nephrons start getting damaged and become incapable of filtering blood. Thus, the strain on the healthy nephrons increases, leading them to also slowly deteriorate in function. Ultimately, all the nephrons become unhealthy. This is when acute renal failure is identified. The kidneys here stop functioning altogether, due to which the waste and toxins cannot be flushed out of the body. Thus, waste products, unhealthy fluids, and electrolytes are stored within the body itself, resulting in a fatal condition. The kidneys may fail suddenly or due to reasons like lack of blood flow to the kidneys, or progressive degeneration.

When such a condition arises, patients are suggested a dialysis, where toxic substances are removed from the blood through external processes. This balances the amount of salts and chemicals within the body, while also filtering the waste. Two types of dialysis procedures can be suggested – peritoneal or hemo dialysis. Another option is kidney transplant; but, this is only possible when a suitable donor is found within the first year of renal failure.

To prevent such kidney failure conditions, you must keep a check on any changes you experience in urination, skin rashes, irregular swelling, and abdominal pain. If these changes are seen constantly within your body, you must immediately consult Maitri Hospital’s urologist in Kota to identify any kidney problems as soon as possible. Here, you will be thoroughly assessed, and any kind of problems within the urinary tract will be identified. So, get in touch whenever you face any such problems. Here, you can also get services of Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP), bladder tumour removal, kidney stones removal, and erectile dysfunction treatment.
